19 Crazy Times Social Media Killed Innocent People

Social media makes it easier to pick up a fight. Whether it’s a nasty comment or a shameless tweet, the vast audience makes it harder to endure, and violence sure comes handy.

Check out these 19 stories where social media killed the innocent. Trust us! You will cut your Facebook or Twitter time after finding out what can happen!

“If you’re such a good friend why did you poke my missus?”

The Facebook “Poke” might be dead, but it took its toll on people that had no clue on how to use it properly.

Take a good look at Richard Rovetto, the man, the legend, the one that failed to understand the profound implication of Facebook technology. Poking someone else’s girlfriend is not nice, whether you do it IRL or on social media

Boyfriend Scott Humphrey lost it so badly he skipped the traditional Messenger insults and went on to punch his friend several times. Rovetto fell and hit his head, and the rest is written in the autopsy file.

The judge went mild on Scott. Such a fist fight is common among male friends, and only misfortune stepped in to make the case deadly.

2. Woman Perishes in Car Crash after Posting Selfie on Facebook

via Fox News

We all post selfies on Facebook, but most of us have the common sense of not doing that while driving.

For 32-year-old Courtney Ann Sanford, sharing her excellent mood with her hundreds of friends turned into a priority, one that distracted her decisively. Courtney lost control of the vehicle, which smashed, ultimately claiming her life.

“The happy song makes me HAPPY,” the woman wrote on her wall just one minute before the fatal crash. Naughty coroners should have added, “and smashing my car at 100 mph makes me DEAD.”

Courtney became a poster child for just how easy it is for social media to hijack one’s existence. The virtual world absorbed her to such a level she let her guard down and ignored the dangers of reality.

Until fully autonomous cars hit your local car dealer with reasonable prices, you’ll have to restrain yourself from Facebook while driving. No one will blame you for posting that selfie minutes later.

3. Teen Girl Kills to Keep Up with Her Facebook Profile Hobbies

Alyssa Bustamante used a very lame excuse to justify slaying a 9-year-old neighbor.

Alyssa was 15 at the time, and her photos are clear in showing a deeply disturbed individual. The teenager mentioned “killing” and “making people suffer” in her Facebook intro, and that should have been a warning sign for parents and educator.

Her victim, Elizabeth Olsen, was random. All Alyssa wanted was to see how it feels to take someone’s life. She later described the experience in her journal (who keeps one of those, right?) as “ahmazing” and “pretty enjoyable.”

Although a juvenile at the time she committed the murder, Bustamante earned a 35-year sentence. And you know what’s worse? There is no social media behind bars to help you break the ice with that zealous warden or creepy cellmate.

Forbidding his son to access his favorite social media network attracted a harsh sentence on an unsuspecting father.

49-year-old Ted Schlicker was not a smart man. His first mistake was to call his son Hughstan. The second was to trust he would react politely after having his Internet cut for the day. The third was to label his son “loser” for using MySpace instead of Facebook or Twitter.

Unable to update his media profile, the rebel without a cause mustered so much hate he took a shotgun and gave his father an early ticket for the afterlife. Although foolish in his beliefs, Ted ads up on the list as another innocent victim of social media.

We’ve all been there!

The dreaded Facebook relationship status did more harm than good throughout the years, breaking hearts and occasionally staining bedroom sheets with blood. For the jealous husband, Edward Richardson, seeing his wife, Sarah, change her availability to “Single” was too much to handle.

The man sneaked up at night and stabbed her to death (13 times), right before committing suicide. Do you see the story ending differently?

Maybe something as simple as a TALK would have changed her mind.

The worst part is that the Facebook status update did not come out of the blue. The two had already signed the divorce papers, and her switch to “Single” was both imminent and justifiable.

Well, this story is set to disappoint you.

All those attractive teenage girls we advertised where nothing but fake Facebook profiles, set up by a lady with complex issues. 28-year-old New Zealander Natalia Burgess dedicated much of her free time to luring dozens of teen students into their first heartbreak.

Natalie put her creativity to a real test to come up with enticing back-stories. The characters she created functioned according to the same script. They all ended up dead in mysterious circumstances that involved suicide or sheer violence.

More than 40 teens fell for the trick and engaged in fake online relationships with the many personas of this Facebook troll. You will be relieved cops busted her. Natalie will be out of her weapon of choice in the three years she has to spend behind bars.

Do you think the two look good together?

What to us seems like a cute couple sharing their quality time together on MySpace, triggered a blinding jealousy for an ex-girlfriend and soon-to-be murderer. Rachel Wade asked in vain her archrival to stop chilling with her beau.

This love triangle was never meant to work, despite the fact that boy-toy Josh doesn’t seem to bother having two ladies by his side.

We repeat this in the hope of making it clearer. The best place to store a kitchen knife is in a kitchen cabinet and not in your enemy’s heart. Sarah Ludemann joins our list of innocent people killed by social media. If only she hadn’t posted that photo of her and Josh!

Columbia is the kind of country where bad guys are not shy about using social media to serve their evil schemes.

However, don’t get your hopes high on cocaine deals happening in broad daylight of Facebook walls. No, we are talking something even more sinister her.

A mysterious Facebook Death List emerged in a Colombian town and those having their names written on it started perishing one by one. At this point, this seems the classic horror movie, you know, the one where suspense music signals each killing. This was real!

The murders stopped once the teens remaining on the list fled. Was it all a highly elaborated prank? Facebook can easily track the source of its content but decided to stay silent. How about that?

9. Facebook Feud Turns into Deadly Car Chase

Bad romance fueled another social media feud that ended tragically.

Torrie Lynn Emery, 23, and Danielle Booth, 20, didn’t hear about sharing a boyfriend, so they decided to settle everything with a joust. It started as a Facebook quarrel of the worst kind and evolved into a hot pursuit through rush hour traffic.

Torrie was the one who engaged, and the result was carnage. Attempting to escape, the car holding Danielle ran a red light and got hit by a truck. The damage was total, and Alesha Abernathy (Danielle’s friend) died.

And that’s not all! Torrie raced her car and rammed the rival’s several times while having her 3-year-old child in the backseat. “Mommy, mommy, don’t let them go away!”

10. Ex-Wife Murdered for Talking about Child Support on FB

Lisa Beverley made use of intensive Facebook to cope with her single mother status.

However, the 30-year-old didn’t limit herself to posts about cats. No, sir! She went on to brag about how her ex-husband fails to pay child support and how he is a failure to the human race.

Adam Mann didn’t take it lightly. Just one day after being taunted in front of all his virtual friends, the jobless father paid his former lover a visit. What happened is beyond gruesome.

Adam beat Lisa to death with a hammer and left his 5-year-old son to discover the body in the morning. Someone is in for some deep daddy issues!

Facebook should take the time and instruct the users on just how easy it is to block people and prevent them from referencing you in their post. Physical violence should come as a last resort!

11. Woman Purges Boyfriend for Facebook Addiction

“He is sitting on Facebook, completely blanking me when I’m talking to him.”

That’s how a jealous hairdresser changed her mood status on Facebook, only minutes before plunging a bread knife through the unlucky boyfriend’s heart. 23-year-old Terri-Marie Palmer made use of social networking to share her frustration, but it did little to calm her.

Damon Searson was your average bloke, killing time on Facebook, and delaying the action of getting a job for as long as possible. Just look at that innocent face! He must have looked adorable playing Candy Crush or fertilizing some crops in FarmVille.

Terri-Marie tried to make everything sound like an accident, but the judges were not impressed. Cutting a finger while slicing bread counts as common, but not stabbing your boyfriend.

12. Teen Killed at The End of a Bitter Twitter Feud

When one teenager tweeted that another couldn’t rap, their vanities aligned on a collision course.

The two teens raised the banners and assembled their gangs for a real life faceoff that had all prospects to turn into a rap battle. It wasn’t the case!

18-year-old Jerrold Parker (pictured above) would soon regret he signed up for a Twitter account. Devin Leggett (pictured below) packed a “good friend” for the meeting, and in the shooting that followed he hit Parker decisively.

Social media is a breeding ground for conflicts and, as you saw so far, most of them evolve into violence and the loss of innocent lives.

13. 17-Year-Old Kills Herself Is Cyber Bullied to the Point of Suicide

The lovely Cassandra “Cecci” Porter committed suicide after she couldn’t hold a grip on her emotions.

Her demise came after a long battle with cyber bullying that showed just how dangerous the phenomenon is. 17-year-old Cecci hung herself after her initial attempt (overdosing on pills) failed.

Social media is a haven for bullies that are lazy enough to prefer the online environment to real life interactions. Where are the good days when school tugs would perform a painful wedgy on anyone trespassing through their territory?

Can you guess what kind of harassment Cassandra suffered? It all started with some “angry faces” on Facebook. Next up, someone set up a fake account from where an avalanche of insults and suicide suggestions blasted towards her.

Parents tried in vain to keep Cecci away from her phone. Ask any teen nowadays. They would rather give up a kidney than stay logged out from social media for more than two hours.

Are you wondering what to say to your ex’s Facebook invite for coffee this weekend?

How about “no?” Many cunning plans disguise their true intentions with a smiley face or Pusheen cat. That is exactly what happened to unfortunate Sarah Elston.

The 22-year-old artist accepted to see her ex, and the hopes were high for reviving their relationship. Unfortunately, the boyfriend had something else in mind. He was there with a revenge agenda, and he didn’t end the date until he left Sarah’s body lifeless.

Mark Zuckerberg must have a real hard time sleeping at night. His Facebook takes pride in helping people connect. At the same time, it makes the job easier for all those sick individuals out there.

When two former BFFs take their Twitter feud IRL, you know it will not end pretty.

Jameg Blake and Kwame Dancy started their quarrel over a woman they both liked. In the dark days when we had no social media, such a conflict would not have reached for an audience.

However, times have changed, and the 22-year-old childhood friends felt like acting cocky online. Their last tweets are a testimony to what happened.

Kwame tweeted “betta chill asap,” and that infuriated his buddy. Jameg didn’t “chill” and went instead for a shotgun, piercing a generous opening through him.

Social media is all about sharing the most important moments of your life with the others. Jameg immediately posted a “RIP Kwame.” Police obviously used that as evidence to lock him down for good.

16. Innocent Girlfriend Killed for MySpace Comment

What happens to your social media once you are dead?

15-year-old Mikarah “Tinky” Sanders probably had little spare time to ponder on that. She would have never guessed that posts expressing grief and black-and-white photos would soon replace her silly social media antics.

It all started when her boyfriend spotted a MySpace comment coming from an online admirer. You know the type – smiley face and other hieroglyphs only teens can decipher. 16-year-old Matthew Dubois already had an impressive criminal record, so the .547 handgun he kept close by came in handy.

Mathew shot the poor girl in the face right on New Year’s Eve. He didn’t settle with that.

Mathew shot himself in the shoulder, hoping that will send the police on a wild goose chase after an imaginary gang member.

17. Dolphin Dies after Beach-goers Claim Instagram Glory

via Sky News

The race for social media glory is on, and everyone burns to post something that would impress friends and elicit hundreds of “likes.”

Such an obsession went too far on an Argentinian beach, where a dolphin was paraded around like a trophy until it died of dehydration. The poor fellow swam in shallow waters to salute the crowd until one beachgoer saw the golden Instagram potential it held.

Before you rush to judge those people, just look again at the photos. Baby dolphins are probably the cutest thing ever, and it is normal for people to get excited. Nevertheless, no one likes dead pets and tourists lost interest the moment the mammal passed away.

Unfortunately, there is no justice to be served here!

18. The Farmville Murders

via Richmond Times-Dispatch

Don’t let the name fool you!

We are not talking about the same FarmVille your friends annoy you with hundreds of play requests. No, a city called Farmville exists, and what happened there would make any professional serial killer jealous.

22-year-old aspiring rapper Richard McCroskey had listened to so much horrorcore music bone-chilling lyrics probably got stuck in his head. He went on to maul to death his girlfriend – Emma Neiderbrock, her parents, and a friend.

Richard was close to getting away if it weren’t for social media. His MySpace account (who still uses that, right?) offered investigators more than a hint he was the bludgeon murderer they were looking for.

When your profile is completely overrun by your obsession with murder and chaos, you shouldn’t complain about ending up as the prime suspect.

19. Lousy Mom Kills Baby while Playing FarmVille

via Jacksonville

Violence nurtured by social media hit its absolute worse when a 22-year-old mother found herself unable to focus on fertilizing crops in FarmVille.

That was because her 3-month-old son would not obey silence. Alexandra Tobias shocked the infant until he went mute. Unfortunately, she did not discover the secret button for which all parents crave but rather hit the little guy’s head on surfaces hard enough to cause decisive damage.

Alexandra would have to change her Facebook status now. The judge that sentenced her to 50 years behind bars apparently was not a big fan of social media, and therefore couldn’t understand how her maternal instinct got distracted by the virtual world.

The case concludes our list and proves one more time that social media kills innocent people at a scale far greater than we thought. Just be careful next time you Like, Tweet, or whatever the hell people do on MySpace.
