The most hated TV characters have one thing in common. They don’t really care what people think, as long as payday is generous.
However, for some of them, the hate doesn’t end with the role. What happens when fans just can’t go over it?
1. Ramsay Bolton – ‘Game of Thrones’
Ramsay Bolton infuriated GoT fans by putting on display blatant acts of betrayal and savagery.
What he did to poor Theon easily ranks as one of the sickest moments in TV history. It made Hannibal Lector sit and take notes like an embarrassed pupil.
Iwan Rheon was lucky. According to the books, his character should have been much worse. Producers Benioff and Weiss gave Ramsay a funny side just to comfort viewers. It was pointless. Although he was part of the main cast only for the last three season, Ramsay Bolton attracted fan hate like few TV characters ever did.
It was pointless. Although he was part of the main cast only for the last three season, Ramsay Bolton attracted fan hate like few TV characters ever did.
The next one made his way on the blacklist with a hit.
2. Negan – ‘The Walking Dead’
Negan is a character that fans either adore or hate.
The only thing to admire here is his understanding of leadership in times of crisis. Anything else about Negan revolves around Lucille, the barb-wired baseball bat, and his string of killings.
Some of you already know what Negan did to deserve so much hate coming his way. For those still tangled in the early seasons of ‘The Walking Dead,’ we will enforce some degree of discretion.
Let’s just say that without the zombie apocalypse turning the world order upside down Negan would have dominated Major League Baseball. Can you imagine him having Glenn Rhee or Abraham Ford playing as catchers?
She annoyed fans so many times producers saw no other option.
3. Dana Brody – ‘Homeland’
It’s hard being Dana Brody, one of the most hated TV characters ever.
From lamenting all the time to taking nude selfies, Dana did an excellent job portraying the typical teenage daughter that has daddy issues left unresolved.
For obvious reasons, girls her age were never fans of ‘Homeland.’ Something more like ‘Gossip Girl’ comes down their alley.
Negative reactions came mostly from fans that wanted more espionage action and political feuds, and less teen drama. Producers saw no other option than to cut Dana from the show starting with season 4.
‘Homeland’ left a terrible legacy for Morgan Frances Saylor. The 22-year-old has to battle a hate speech that left permanent marks all over the Internet.
Dana will probably go down in history as the angst-ridden daughter that ruined a show.
Our next hated character was a victim of her youth and innocence.
4. Dawn Summers – ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’
‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ was a decent show, at least until Dawn Summers made fans throw vitriol at the TV set.
Hate is like a pet dog. People watching TV feel like taking it for a walk occasionally. New cast members disturbing the status quo are obvious targets.
With a limited character development and no relationship dynamics, Dawn’s arrival in the show was entirely inappropriate. Buffy’s younger sister brought a fresh dose of teenage uneasiness at a time when all the other main cast members became more mature.
Dawn Summers did little to stop ratings from falling ever further. Producers apparently wanted to tap back into the high school audience.
The only thing they succeeded is to give Michelle Trachtenberg a hard to shed bad reputation.
Luckily for fans, the worst screen couple ever was short-lived.
5. Nikki and Paulo – ‘Lost’
Nikki and Paulo got what they deserved after infuriating millions of Losties.
The inconspicuous couple that writers tried to squeeze into the plot ended up having the less glorious death of the show. Given how much the two sucked, we cannot even call the disclosure a spoiler.
Jealousy and greed marked ‘Exposé.’ The most annoying ‘Lost’ episode concludes with Nikki and Paulo bitten by venomous spiders and sent into a death-mimicking paralysis.
Over-zealous Sawyer and Hurley acted on behalf of J. J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof and buried the obnoxious pair. Bloodthirsty viewers probably wanted something more dramatic.
Nevertheless, the hate gland in them got aroused the moment Nikki’s eyes blinked open for a few milliseconds. They were buried alive.
He started great, but puberty kicked in to complicate things. Now people hate him!
6. Manny Delgado – ‘Modern Family’
Manny Delgado points once again how annoying child stars get as they grow up old serving the same TV series.
Most fans held no grudge for Manny during the first couple of season. Everything changed once the sharp youngster turned into a lousy teen that seeks impossible romance and whines about life.
An existential crisis like the one Manny contemplated in the latest seasons provide bored viewers with an excellent excuse to quit the show altogether. The trials and tribulations of growing up are awkward to watch in real life and serve no purpose on the little screen.
However, Manny is not the only ‘Modern Family’ cast to send fans on a hate rampage on forums and social media. Lily Tucker-Pritchett was cute until she became a spoiled little princess.
Lily Tucker-Pritchett was cute until she became a spoiled little princess. Age 9, she is sour as a lemon.
Hate appears when you fail to deliver something promised a long time ago.
7. Ted Mosby – ‘How I Met Your Mother’
Ted Mosby went down in history as the father who told his children the longest most irritating story to date.
Most fans end the series and punch the TV while declaring a Jihad on Mosby. Don’t get us wrong! We adored ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ at least in the early seasons when everything was fresh.
Nevertheless, one couldn’t help but notice Ted brought nothing but a perpetual struggle to find a date that would stay with him for more than one episode. Although the show revolved around him, the other four excelled at all chapters.
Ted was the fifth wheel. His jokes have always been lame when compared to Barney’s.
As for romance, all his relationships appeared as high school flings when put next to the enduring chemistry of Marshall and Lily. Even Robin stole the shows from Ted as being the goofy one. Jokes about Canadians would always beat those about architects.
Fans went mad when Mosby’s spelling deficiencies surfaced. That ‘proffessor’ blooper sealed his fate as one of the most despicable TV characters of recent years.
The next character attracted hate for being too creepy. Check out the tragic outcome!
8. Robbie Rotten – ‘Lazy Town’
The face of Robbie Rotten makes parents lose nights ruminating over how lousy children’s shows have become.
Every sane mind would agree that the awkward character is the worst possible way to say being lazy is not okay. Robbie Rotten treating himself to cakes and doing nothing all day long has better odds in educating young minds on how to become psychopaths.
‘Lazy Town’ is one TV show that makes most adults sick in the stomach. And there is no solid proof its audience counts fewer couch potatoes.
It seems that focusing all that hate at one point worked. Stefán Karl Stefánsson, the actor who plays Robbie, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
We all remember loving him when in fact, we loved the show.
9. Screech – ‘Saved by the Bell’
Screech was one character that triggered a very particular type of hate.
Yep, there might be fans of the series we risk upsetting with the statement. ‘Saved by the Bell’ had its highs, but no thanks to Dustin Diamond.
Screech made viewers reacts in different ways. While some dialed the volume down each time his annoying voice threatened their eardrums; others preferred to fill their lungs with hate. Seeing a pathetic character like Screech attempting to become famous can certainly help one’s self-esteem.
A hateful fan was most likely the one that provoked the stabbing incident. Diamond served three months in jail and probably learned there the rough way just how much irritation he caused.
Hate is like morning coffee for villains. They thrive on it!
10. J. R. Ewing – ‘Dallas’
J.R. Ewing infested our hearts with hate.
Nevertheless, a profound admiration lied deep down under all those thoughts of seeing J.R. dead. Dallas introduced the rough way of doing business by exploiting emotional weaknesses. Family, friends, or business rivals, it didn’t matter!
J.R evolved from supporting character to a breakout role once producers spotted the potential of turning him into a villain. What followed was an incredible voyage through the worst things a man can do.
Fans hated J.R so much they often crossed the line to threaten the real-life Larry Hagman. Only a few actors with despicable characters on our list can flaunt a similar achievement.
He taught children what hate is. He was awful!
11. Scrappy Doo – ‘Scooby Doo’
The only reason Scrappy-Doo was added to the show was to boost ratings. Fans sensed that and hated it!
Who remembers ‘Lemme at ’em!’ and ‘Puppy Power?’ Those annoying catch phrases did not become children’s favorites as the producers intended. Why? The whole concept of Scrappy was doomed from the very start.
Scooby Doo as a character became adored for performing goofy stuff and wasting little time with weak punchlines. Scrappy was the exact opposite. He was a smart guy always trying to prove others wrong and highlight his superiority.
No wonder most ‘Scooby Doo’ spinoffs went on without the awful sidekick. Kids are not quick to draw hate at their aid. They did it this time!
Are you curious to know which ‘Friends’ star was the most hated? All polls say the same thing.
12. Ross Geller – ‘Friends’
There is no secret that Ross Geller was the hated one.
It starts with his simple-minded lines and awful jokes. It gets even worse. Ross Geller was messy with his personal life throughout the whole ten years of ‘Friends.’ What he did to poor Rachel is beyond words.
Put alongside Chandler, and Joey, Ross emerges as the weakest male character. What probably saved him from being kicked out of the show was the incredible chemistry he shared with Marcel.
The capuchin monkey was a trick producers used to portray Ross in a more flattering way. It didn’t help him! He was already knee-deep in the mud of his sorrows and lamentations.
People started hating her and ended up hating the show as a whole. Awarding the role was a major mistake.
13. Debra Morgan – ‘Dexter’
Every show has its black sheep, and Debra Morgan made many ‘Dexter’ fans lose their minds.
Writers apparently wanted to make Debra appear bossy. She ranks as one of the few female characters casually swearing and acting cocky.
Yes, we get it that she shares most of her time criminals and activates in a professional field traditionally reserved to men. Debra’s approach to feminity acted as a big turn off and attracted a lot of hate speech. Many women quit the show after feeling the bitter taste of betrayal.
Also, let’s us not forget why Jennifer Carpenter is lousy as an actress. She is terrible at putting on display negative emotions other than anger.
Check out the next character that made fans hate her. She did it more than once!
14. Lori Grimes- ‘The Walking Dead’
Why would you hate one of the few female survivors of a zombie pandemic?
Relationships that create geometric shapes never end well. Lori was caught between her husband Rick and his best friend – Shane. The triangle proved deadly and complicated the whole plot.
It was not the first time Sarah Wayne Callies ruined a show with her loose acting. Fans of ‘Prison Break’ would have to make a painful journey back in time and remember always-awkward prison physician Sara Tancredi.
Fans make wish lists regarding characters they wanted dead in the show. Lori might be gone now from ‘The Walking Dead,’ but we all know how easy it is to bring her back.
Producers wanted someone people would hate and not feel bad. She was perfect for the job.
15. Meg Griffin – ‘Family Guy’
Meg Griffin is the odd kid everyone is bullying, and you end up hating as a consequence.
Some of us still have some pity left hidden somewhere for Meg. However, it’s impossible not to give into an evil laughter each time Peter does nasty stuff to her.
We all love seeing Meg suffer. It’s written somewhere in our genetic code, and Seth McFarlane hit the jackpot with his carefully crafted Meg jokes.
With her red hat and geeky face, Meg alternates between damnation and revolt. Fans built their hate even further on her being a sore loser and a party pooper. The only thing soothing their anger is that the lovely Mila Kunis is the one providing Meg’s voice.
Everyone hated him for killing a fans’ favorite. Did he escape revenge?
16. Joffrey Baratheon – ‘Game of Thrones’
‘Game of Thrones’ is mostly about triggering emotional addictions.
We all loved hating Joffrey, and R.R Martin indulged us like kids. What made the young king of Westeros so despicable, is already a cliché for history buffs.
Teenage monarchs are emotionally unstable and resort to cruelty and arrogance to cover the fact that they are not fit to rule. Joffrey scored extra points for being a sadistic brat who used his mother’s skirt to devoid himself of any responsibility.
Can you imagine the gathering that elected Jack Gleeson as the one most fitted for the role? Hundreds of whining boys competed to show who is the most annoying and worthy of hate. That must have been quite a day at the HBO studios.
She was the worst! You must see the most hated TV character in the history of this Universe.
17. Skyler White – ‘Breaking Bad’
If you send hated TV characters to jail for their crimes, then you should award Skyler White with the capital punishment to call it justice.
Ask every male fan who ever watched ‘Breaking Bad.’ The best way to describe Anna Gunn’s role is one word we are not allowed to say (unfortunately). But you get the picture!
The show’s writers certainly knew how to tap the potential of the suburban mom that is critical all the time and doesn’t know how to play it cool.
Fan’s hate grew to ridiculous proportions while watching Skylar give life to the worst form of nagging ever performed before the camera. She joined hands with her sister Marie as silly, moody, and completely unprepared to accept Walter’s incredible gift.
